Exodus 17:4 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 All the Israelites traveled together from the desert of Zin. They traveled from place to place as the Lord commanded. The people traveled to Rephidim and camped there. There was no water there for the people to drink.
2 So they turned against Moses and started arguing with him. They said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why have you turned against me? Why are you testing the Lord?"
3 But the people were very thirsty, so they continued complaining to Moses. They said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Did you bring us out here so that we, our children, and our cattle will all die without water?"
4 So Moses cried to the Lord, "What can I do with these people? They are ready to kill me."
5 The Lord said to Moses, "Go before the Israelites. Take some of the elders of the people with you. Carry your walking stick with you. This is the stick that you used when you hit the Nile River.
6 I will stand before you on a rock at Horeb. Hit that rock with the walking stick and water will come out of it. Then the people can drink." Moses did these things and the elders of Israel saw it.
7 Moses named that place Meribah and Massah, because this was the place that the Israelites turned against him and tested the Lord. The people wanted to know if the Lord was with them or not.
8 At Rephidim the Amalekites came and fought against the Israelites.
9 So Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some men and go and fight the Amalekites tomorrow. I will stand on the top of the hill and watch you. I will be holding the walking stick God gave me."
10 Joshua obeyed Moses and went to fight the Amalekites the next day. At the same time Moses, Aaron, and Hur went to the top of the hill.
11 Any time Moses held his hands in the air, the men of Israel would start winning the fight. But when Moses put his hands down, the men of Israel began to lose the fight.
12 After some time, Moses' arms became tired. So they put a large rock under Moses for him to sit on. Then Aaron and Hur held Moses' hands in the air. Aaron was on one side of Moses and Hur was on the other side. They held his hands up like this until the sun went down.
13 So Joshua and his men defeated the Amalekites in this battle.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Write about this battle. Write these things in a book so that people will remember what happened here. And be sure to tell Joshua that I will completely destroy the Amalekites from the earth."
15 Then Moses built an altar and named it, "The Lord is My Flag."
16 Moses said, "I lifted my hands toward the Lord's throne. So the Lord fought against the Amalekites, as he always has."

2 Wherefore the people H5971 did chide H7378 with H5973 PREP Moses H4872 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Give H5414 us water H4325 OMD that we may drink H8354 . And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Why H4100 IPRO chide H7378 ye with H5978 PREP-1MS me ? wherefore H4100 IPRO do ye tempt H5254 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS ?
3 And the people H5971 thirsted H6770 there H8033 ADV for water H4325 ; and the people H5971 murmured H3885 against H5921 PREP Moses H4872 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO is this H2088 PMS that thou hast brought us up H5927 out of Egypt H4714 M-TFS , to kill H4191 us and our children H1121 and our cattle H4735 with thirst H6772 ?
4 And Moses H4872 cried H6817 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , What H4100 IGAT shall I do H6213 unto this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 ? they be almost H4592 AMS ready H5750 ADV to stone H5619 me .
5 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Go on H5674 before H6440 L-CMP the people H5971 , and take H3947 VQI2MS with H854 PART-2MS thee of the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 ; and thy rod H4294 , wherewith H834 RPRO thou smotest H5221 the river H2975 , take H3947 VQI2MS in thine hand H3027 B-CFS-2MS , and go H1980 .
6 Behold H2009 , I will stand H5975 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee there H8033 upon H5921 PREP the rock H6697 in Horeb H2722 ; and thou shalt smite H5221 the rock H6697 , and there shall come H3318 water H4325 OMD out of H4480 M-PREP-3MS it , that the people H5971 may drink H8354 . And Moses H4872 did H6213 W-VQY3MS so H3651 ADV in the sight H5869 of the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 LMS .
7 And he called H7121 W-VQY3MS the name H8034 CMS of the place H4725 D-NMS Massah H4532 , and Meribah H4809 , because of H5921 PREP the chiding H7379 NMS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and because H5921 PREP they tempted H5254 the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Is H3426 I-ADV the LORD H3068 EDS among H7130 us , or H518 PART not H369 ?
8 Then came H935 W-VQY3MS Amalek H6002 , and fought H3898 with H5973 PREP Israel H3478 in Rephidim H7508 .
9 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , Choose us out H977 men H376 NMP , and go out H3318 , fight H3898 with Amalek H6002 : tomorrow H4279 NMS I H595 PPRO-1MS will stand H5324 on H5921 PREP the top H7218 NMS of the hill H1389 with the rod H4294 of God H430 D-EDP in mine hand H3027 .
10 So Joshua H3091 did H6213 W-VQY3MS as H834 K-RPRO Moses H4872 had said H559 to him , and fought H3898 with Amalek H6002 : and Moses H4872 , Aaron H175 , and Hur H2354 went up H5927 to the top H7218 NMS of the hill H1389 .
11 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when H834 K-RPRO Moses H4872 held up H7311 VHY3MS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS , that Israel H3478 prevailed H1396 : and when H834 he let down H5117 his hand H3027 CFS-3MS , Amalek H6002 prevailed H1396 .
12 But Moses H4872 \' hands H3027 were heavy H3515 ; and they took H3947 W-VQY3MP a stone H68 GFS , and put H7760 W-VQY3MP it under H8478 him , and he sat H3427 W-VQY3MS thereon H5921 PREP-3FS ; and Aaron H175 and Hur H2354 stayed up H8551 his hands H3027 , the one H259 MMS on the one side H2088 M-DPRO , and the other H259 MMS on the other side H2088 ; and his hands H3027 CFD-3MS were H1961 W-VQY3MS steady H530 until H5704 PREP the going down H935 of the sun H8121 .
13 And Joshua H3091 discomfited H2522 Amalek H6002 and his people H5971 with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS .
14 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Write H3789 this H2063 DPRO for a memorial H2146 in a book H5612 BD-NMS , and rehearse H7760 W-VQI2MS it in the ears H241 of Joshua H3091 : for H3588 CONJ I will utterly put out H4229 the remembrance H2143 of Amalek H6002 from under H8478 M-CFS heaven H8064 D-AMD .
15 And Moses H4872 built H1129 W-VQY3MS an altar H4196 NMS , and called H7121 W-VQY3MS the name H8034 CMS-3MS of it Jehovah H3071 - nissi :
16 For he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Because H3588 CONJ the LORD H3050 hath sworn H3027 NFS that the LORD H3068 L-EDS will have war H4421 NFS with Amalek H6002 from generation H1755 to generation H1755 .
